How to obtain your firearms license

Postby SupportTeam » Mon Jul 13, 2009 10:00 am

To obtain a firearms license (PAL - Possession Acquisition License) under the established Firearms Act, individuals must take a Canadian Firearms Safety Course and pass the written and practical tests - or - challenge and pass the tests without taking the course. Additionally for restricted firearms, individuals must also take the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (for handguns).

In our opinion, because safety should always come first and because of some of the perceptions around firearms that already exist in general, we feel it is extremely important to take the course and become as educated as possible around the sport of shooting firearms. The course has valuable information on proper and legal storage, display, and transport of firearms and is less about "how to shoot" an actual firearm. It is highly recommended.

To find a course in your area we recommend contacting your local gun club. If they do not offer any courses at the club, they can certainly refer you to a certified instructor in your area. Courses are typically one to two full days depending on the class of firearm you want to get.

For more information contact your local gun club, a list of local clubs can be obtained from the CSSA (Canadian Shooting Sports Association) http://www.cdnshootingsports.org.

Lastly for more information on firearms licensing please visit the RCMP website for more details http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca or call 1-800-731-4000
